Okay, I think this clears things up (for me).
If I use "AT&K0", hardware handshaking is turned OFF.
If I use "AT&K1, AT&K2, or AT&K3", then hardware handshaking
is turned ON, enabling bi-directional RTS/CTS hardware flow control.
