I have seen online that command-T will allow users to enter Terminal Mode in ProTERM 3.1 and go "online" with a direct terminal connection to the modem port to issue strings directly to the Wiimodem232. Once I am done, though, how do I exit this mode and go "offline" again?

I think you use command-T again to exit.

That doesn't seem to work on my IIGS. I stay stuck in Terminal Mode.

You might want to look at the ProTerm3.1 manual. The IIgs uses a different keyboard arrangement because it has more keys.

The manual doesn't seem to acknowledge the existence of the terminal mode.

Well, that's not true.

Do a search on "terminal mode" and you will find dozens of references to it.
Here is a link to the original and v3.1 manuals:

HOLDING the Option (Apple) key for 3 seconds will invoke the pop-up menu where you can change modes.
