logging in on an irc server

Hi,

Does any one know how to log in on an irc server? I tried several with atdt irc.xs4all.nl:6667 for instance, that connects but eventually times out. Same with irc.freenode.net, I receive 3 lines, then it says it cant find identd and times out again.

Would be nice to irc on my 64
