The WiModem can stream (either direction) continuously forever. Otherwise uploads and downloads would never work.
Check something for me. In ProTerm go to terminal mode and type AT&K? and tell me what the result is. It has to be 1 for flow control to be enabled. BBS's are typically very slow, except when uploads/downloads are going on. So, I guess if the CPU was fast enough and there wasn't much overhead with display handling you might be able to handle normal BBS browsing without seeing dropped characters, especially when a real UART is present (like the SSC).
The WiModem does have a command for changing the internal buffer size before CTS is asserted:
AT*BL[x] – Set buffer limit [limit]
This command will set the buffer limit used before CTS is asserted. Default is 512, with a range of 64 to 1460.
