RE: Striketerm UP9600 freezes with WiModem - dawnsboy - 10-08-2020

Scratch my last message. I have had it! What is going on?  Huh

After successfully configuring Striketerm 2013 final for use at 9600 baud with the UP9600 driver I saved the configuration. I used the modem to connect to a BBS and then to SDF.ORG. After logging out of sdf.org I shutdown.

I restarted the computer, load and run Striketerm 2013. The software booted with the saved configuration.

I selected F3 for terminal. The terminal failed to respond to keyboard input.

I went back to the terminal menu and selected C= and the e key. The terminal responded by echoing keyboard input.

Striketerm did not respond to commands. I.E. atdt whateverbbs.dynu.net:6400 yielded nothing. The same with every other command that I input. No Response!

I have a basic modem that I bought for $20 bucks including S&H just to see if I would like going back to the old BBS system via wifi. It does run at 9600 baud flawlessly in Striketerm 2014 Final and CCGMS 2020.

I think this is just an issue with StrikeTerm. If you delete the config it works, but that program is pretty buggy in general with anything dealing with the UP9600 hack. I would recommend using CCGMS. What real modem do you have that operates at 9600 baud?

RE: Striketerm UP9600 freezes with WiModem - dawnsboy - 10-09-2020

CCGMS can't handle sdf.org or some of the BBS sites that are not Commodore specific so I prefer to use Striketerm.

The other wifi modem that I own is from Szygy-Systems.ca. I purchased it on Tindie. It gets along just fine with CCGMS 2020 and Striketerm 2014 at 9600 baud.

It does not have the command set that your modem has available. Example: AT*T1 nor can it do ATPT.

This morning I changed the config file to load with the user port modem at 300 baud on your modem with Striketerm 2013.

Once loaded I selected modem from the main menu and loaded the UP9600 driver without issue.

I selected F3 for the terminal and entered AT*B9600(RETURN)

I changed back to the main menu and changed the baud rate to 9600.

At this point I am able to use Striketerm 2013 at 9600 baud.

I DO NOT SAVE THIS CONFIGURATION. Saving the configuration will prevent the UP9600 driver from loading the next time I use the software.

I keep the config with the user port modem selected at 300 baud.

I repeat the above process each time I use the modem if I want to use the UP9600 driver.

It is not optimal but it works.  Dodgy

I agree with you that the software is buggy. There does not seem to be any issue with the hardware at all. I like the device and am strongly considering a purchase of the Wimodem 232 for my one of my other vintage computers. I will make certain to do my research on the best terminal program to use with it before I do that though.

Thank you again for your help.

Any reason why you are using StrikeTerm 2013 and not any of the later versions?

Let me know what computer you want to use with the WiModem232.  That device supports up to 230,400 baud with no “hacks” required like the C64 needs.  I have used the WiModem232 the Amiga, TRS-80, Atari ST, PC, Apple II+, Apple IIc, Apple IIgs, Tandy 100 & 102, Macintosh, and others.

I happened to be in Striketerm 2013 when I found a work around that will work consistently. I am not having the same luck with ST2014Final.

I am considering the use of the WiModem 232 on a PC.

PC works fine. I had to get a DB9<>DB25 converter.

I will have to get the same converter. DB9 Female to DB25 Male.
